Artichoke — vanbytheriver
My first encounter with this complicated vegetable came well into my 20’s. Ours was a basic peas, carrots, corn kind of family. It was at a small roadside restaurant called “Spuds” in Salt Lake City, Utah. Its success came with simplicity. They only served 2 things; baked potatoes, with all kinds of toppings, and steamed […]
Neighbors Near and Far
A few days back, I heard a very loud and scary crash outside our home… somewhere down the block. I yelled for hubs and we both went out to see if someone needed assistance. Doors flew open and neighbors noisily poured out of their houses.
I heard what sounded like a gunshot and hubs saw a car speeding around the corner on three tires. “What’s going on?” “Everyone okay?” “Call 911!” Someone near the corner rang out “I got the plate number!!” and we all cheered.
A car had just plowed into two cars parked on the street in front of our neighbor’s house. One car was pushed so hard that it almost landed on the sidewalk as it damaged the second car.

While we are standing there, a car speeds down our block, does a U-turn and flies back down the street. Curious.
We all had our smart phones out and were comparing stories…..”What did you hear?” “Who’s car?” It appears our neighbor a few doors down had two guests over and their cars were now destroyed. They just stood there and we tried to make encouraging comments. They were thanking everyone for mobilizing so quickly.
But the story is not over. I don’t know how many noticed the car that made the U-turn, but when the car returned I recognized it.

A kind young man, Robert, stepped out and shared his story. He was not from the neighborhood, but when he turned down our street he was face to face with a car on three wheels driving like a bat out of hell. He knew someone was up to no good. Once he made the U-turn he followed the vehicle for a cat and mouse chase around the back roads, alleys, etc. The hit and run driver even tried the old “turn off the lights and drive very slowly” trick, but Robert was determined not to let this guy get away.
Robert stayed in communication with the police until they joined him and stopped the hit and run perpetrator. Knowing we were a curious bunch….he came back to tell us that the guy was in police custody. We all cheered!
Clearly, you don’t have to live in a neighborhood to be a good neighbor. An officer arrived and we all said our goodbyes and let the officer talk with the two car owners.
Thank you, Robert (no idea his last name), for being our neighbor.

Sunshine and Color

During the month of May, Schreiner’s Gardens opens its doors (really, its yards) to the public. My husband and I spent a lovely sunny afternoon strolling through the gardens. We picked two flowers from the HUNDREDS. They will be dug up in June and mailed to us. We figured that if we make this trip a tradition and buy two flowers each time, we can have quite a spread.

Summer Blooms

As spring moves to summer, I change the mantel from Easter themed to colors that are equally bright, yet different. The picture is a colored pencil drawing by my husband. On either side is his handiwork as well. A mantel of roses, irises, bamboo, and a peony.
Amazing what flowers can do for a space. It is definitely glamour time for the living room.

A Bicycle Built for Two by Creatfuldodger
“Hurray, road trip!” she exclaimed, “I’ve got the map, I shoddy the front seat”. “Hold on,” he replied “curb your enthusiasm, so we get there in one piece” as he applied the breaks. May Ocean

Our May adventure to Lincoln City was filled with blue skies and wonderful sunsets. We got some “good news/bad news” from the desk when we checked in. The good news…..no one had the room above us. The bad news…..the whole top floor was empty because they were re-roofing while we were there. No way to warn us. The company was supposed to be there last week.
I was not looking forward to three days of hammering, but it all went rather smoothly. The hammering was not as bad as all the equipment (and the sounds the shingles made when thrown from the top floor. *shudder*) Thank goodness ocean waves can overwhelm so many other sounds. Plus BLUE SKIES – NO RAIN
Robert spent extra time during low time to find some beautiful rocks. He treasures them. Collecting was just half the fun. The second half was organizing them with a “look at this one” and “see the layers in this one.”

It was my job to pick out a new breakfast spot, since we try to do something different each visit. I’ve always been fascinated with a swanky hotel called Inn at Spanish Head not too far from our modest digs. I read there was a great breakfast so we were there when it opened. The restaurant served good food, and the view was crazy beautiful.

We tried to get a selfie without backlighting ourselves too much while still showing the view.
Don’t file the next part under “too much information.” As it is with being human, I had to visit the bathroom. I walked in and was confronted with this scene. I KID YOU NOT.

When a restaurant’s bathroom has a better view than your hotel room, one might imagine the cost of a room. Nevertheless, we wouldn’t switch. We love The Sandcastle, and stay there every time we can. Note: I made sure to catch a corner of the sink just to prove….holy cow, it’s a bathroom.
While I didn’t see “our” seal this time, I was lucky enough to see the spout and body of whale/s! Such creatures. I either saw one whale four times or four different whales. Either way, it was a thrill to experience.
